MADIKERI: Abdul Lathif, a Congress leader, died in a freak accident inside the forest on Friday. A gun pierced through his waist and stomach, said police.
Stanely, Lathif's driver, told police that on Thursday evening the two along with four other villagers had allegedly gone to Birunani in the Brahmagiri forest range to poach. They parked their vehicle in Annalamada Girish's house before entering the forest.
Around 8pm when an elephant came in Lathif's path, he panicked and slipped from the rock he was standing on. His gun went off accidentally, and its butt pierced him killing him on the spot. When the four villagers realised that he was dead they fled, Stanely told police in his statement. He also told police that he cannot identify the villagers who accompanied them. Stanely reached Virajpet at 3am and informed Lathif's family of the incident. His brother, Arif, lodged a complaint with the Birunani police suspecting foul play.
Superintendent of police Manjunath Annigeri visited the spot. Kutta circle inspector Shivashankar will probe into the incident, he added. A post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain the exact cause of death.

‘Lathif was shot with his own gun’
Madikeri, Nov 22, 2012, DHNS:
Investigation has proved that Virajpet Block Congress President and Zilla Panchayat Former Member Abudl Lathif was shot with his own gun, said Kodagu Superintendent of Police Manjunath Annigeri.
Addressing a press meet in his office on Wednesday, he said that Lathif along with accused Preetham, Harish, Rabin and Punnachha had gone hunting in Bramhagiri Wildlife Forest near Beerunani. The group had camped in the place on November 16. After food and drinks, they started fighting regarding some financial issues. Lathif decided to go back to his village. To stop him, the rest pretended to calm him down and Punnachha shot Lathif with his own gun, said the SP.
The four who have been arrested were earlier into Ganja business. They also had financial ties with Lathif. After the fight that night, Lathif said that he won't pay any money. The accused feared that Lathif may speak about their Ganja business in open and hence decided to kill him. There is no other political motive and there is no hand of any influential person in the murder, he said.
The accused also threatened Lathif's car driver to tell that the death was due to an accident. This was the reason, the accidental death complaint was filed. The accused had planned to escape to Kerala from Bangalore. The cops arrested the four in Hunsur. They have been presented before the court and will be in judicial custody till December 5.
Further investigation has to be done to find out the financial relation between Lathif and the accused. The weapon used for murder and the Gypsy vehicle has been seized.
The case investigation officer who is the Mysore District Additional SP Mohan Reddy was present.

The Double clue
The double clue is really interesting. This one ranks second in my list of Agatha Christie's works, first being A mirror crack'd from side to side

Vision of truth
Oct 11:He stood in the balcony of his apartment sipping a hot coffee. It was a dark sky and he could see the headlights of the automobiles running below, in the street roads. Cold and steady wind was caressing his long hair and his bare shoulders. He could hear the voice of his wife speaking over her phone to a relative.
He always took a break for about half an hour in between his writing sessions. This time he chose a murder mystery. He wanted his readers to have something different from the typical love stories he used to give them.
The choice of the subject was not random. He himself was curious about the strange murder that happened in the next street three years ago. He always wanted to know who had murdered that gentleman. He had read every news article about that murder in dailies. He remembered everything to the minutest details, the discovery of the heeled shoe print over the balcony of the victims room, the strange odor of perfume in the room and the shirtless state in which the body was lying in the floor in that chilly night. This time he let his imagination to do findings.
He always felt that the motive behind the murder was an illicit love affair. He wanted his reader's to have the some difficulty in finding, guessing the culprit, motive and the method of murder.
First, he chose himself to be the murderer, that needed a narrator change so later he shifted the role to his wife. He was satisfied by his choice of the murderer as the first person's wife is least suspected.
He thought about his wife's response about his choice of murderer and the way he can convince her, by telling her that he uses of false names and false locations in the story, so readers can never relate to him or her, and about going for a dinner after the book release.
He wrote it down quickly and had his second coffee in the balcony. When he returned to the study for some minor corrections he found his papers arranged well.
" Martha, did you come to this room?" he asked.
The response was a No
He couldn't sleep well that night. At midnight he felt something moving up to his neck.
Oct 12:"These writers are always mad, no one knows why they kill themselves", somebody responded after reading the newspaper.
Nobody ever read his murder mystery.
